In today’s DataStage Tutorial, we are going to discuss the difference between Server Transformer and Parallel Transformer in DataStage.

What is Server Transformer Stage?

The Server Transformer is also called as Basic Transformer Stage! The BASIC Transformer stage is a processing stage that appears under the processing category in the tool palette in the Transformer shortcut container. It gives access to BASIC transforms and functions.

The BASIC Transformer stage is a processing stage. It appears under the processing category in the tool palette in the Transformer shortcut container.

The BASIC Transformer stage is similar in appearance and function to the Transformer stage described in Transformer stage. It gives access to BASIC transforms and functions (BASIC is the language supported by the server engine and available in server jobs). For a description of the BASIC functions available see InfoSphere DataStage Server Job Developer Guide.

You can only use BASIC transformer stages on SMP systems (not on MPP or cluster systems).

What is Parallel Transformer Stage?

The parallel transform functions are accessed from the expression editor under the Function menu item. You can use these functions when you define a derivation in a Transformer stage. The functions are described by category.

This set includes functions that take string arguments or return string values. If you have national language support enabled, the arguments strings or returned strings can be strings or ustrings. The same function is used for either string type. The only exceptions are the functions StringToUstring () and UstringToString ().

Difference between Server Transformer and Parallel Transformer in DataStage

The main difference is server Transformer supports basic transforms only, but in parallel both basic and parallel transforms. Also, server transformer is basic language compatibility, whereas parallel transformer is C++ language compatibility.

Server Transformer and Parallel Transformer in DataStage is Explained as Follows:

In server jobs, support single input stream link and multiple input references link wherein parallel support only single input stream link and no reference link.

Also, lookup has to be done in transformer stage whereas in parallel it has separate lookup stage for this.

In parallel, it has the capability to perform the surrogate key generation as an in-built functionality whereas, no such functionality available in server job transformation stage.
